Senior Data Engineer

Join a short, foundational engagement helping a large industrial organization's supply chain analytics team build out its Databricks and Power BI setup from the ground up — fixing performance issues on large-scale reports and establishing the governance needed to manage a sprawling citizen-developer landscape. In this role, you will:
  • Help build the foundations of the Databricks/Power BI environment essentially from scratch, since the organization's official BI pipeline is currently blocked and the team is largely on its own.
  • Move calculation logic (e.g. date-difference/working-days-style functions used to measure supply chain speed) into Databricks rather than letting it slow down Power BI.
  • Redesign semantic data models to fix performance on large Power BI reports — evaluating whether to use several smaller semantic models combined into larger ones, Direct Query vs. import, and similar architectural choices, with datasets in the tens of millions of rows
  • Help resolve lingering performance issues from a prior Qlik-to-Power BI migration, where reports that ran fine in Qlik have been lagging since being rebuilt in Power BI.
  • Build reusable templates and best practices for how data models should be structured going forward, so future report-building work (continuing beyond this engagement) has a solid pattern to follow.
  • Help design the data flow architecture between Databricks and Power BI Service/Lakehouse — deciding what should live where, and how self-service users (who should not need direct Databricks access) can discover and reach the data they need.
  • Additional: Advise on and help build monitoring and governance for a large (~200-person) citizen-developer community — giving the core team visibility into what data models and reports exist and whether governance guidelines are actually being followed

You will thrive if:
  • You're a very experienced, senior Databricks specialist
  • You have deep Power BI expertise, including semantic model design, performance optimization for large-scale reports, Power BI Service workspaces, and dataflows.
  • As a plus: You've held a leadership position on a large organizational BI program before, ideally one involving citizen development at scale, and know how to build monitoring and governance models for that kind of environment.
  • You're fluent in English (Finnish not required).
  • You're comfortable with a few days on-site in Uusimaa, for workshops in the first week, with the remaining hands-on build work done remotely.
  • Locations: Remote
  • Technologies: Databricks, Power BI
