App Test Engineer
We are now looking for an App Test Engineer on the behalf of our client.
Role purpose:
The App Test Engineer is responsible for evaluating the quality of the mobile app throughout ongoing development. The app is the primary test target, and the role works closely with the mobile app team to assess whether backlog deliveries behave as intended and provide a reliable, coherent user experience.
Daily work is centered on hands-on manual exploratory testing of tickets selected from the backlog. Testing may cover a complete feature, a defined sub-part of a feature that is still under development, a defect fix, or a change to an existing user flow. The engineer learns the intended behavior, explores realistic and unexpected usage paths, identifies risks and defects, and provides timely feedback to the team while development is in progress. When no tickets are ready for testing or additional capacity is available, the engineer extends and maintains the existing mobile app test automation built with Appium and pytest.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform daily manual exploratory testing of mobile app backlog tickets, including new functionality, defect fixes, technical changes, and refinements to existing user journeys.
- Test complete features as well as individual sub-parts of ongoing features as they become available during development.
- Review tickets, acceptance criteria, designs, and related technical information to understand the intended behavior and identify areas that require clarification.
- Explore normal user journeys, alternative flows, edge cases, interruptions, invalid inputs, state changes, and interactions with existing app functionality.
- Evaluate functionality, usability, visual behavior, navigation, error handling, responsiveness, and consistency across relevant devices and operating-system versions.
- Document findings clearly, including steps to reproduce, expected and actual behavior, device and app context, and supporting evidence.
- Discuss findings directly with developers and product representatives, support defect triage, and retest corrections when they are ready.
- Provide early and continuous quality feedback so that issues can be addressed before a complete feature is finished or prepared for release.
- Identify regression risks and perform focused regression checks around changed and related areas of the app.
- Maintain test objectives, exploratory charters, coverage information, and known-risk summaries when these improve collaboration and follow-up.
- Contribute to refining backlog tickets by highlighting unclear requirements, missing scenarios, testability concerns, dependencies, and quality risks.
- When no backlog tickets are ready for testing or additional capacity is available, extend and maintain the existing mobile app test automation in the Appium framework using pytest. Add coverage for stable and valuable scenarios, improve existing tests, investigate failures, and keep the suite reliable and maintainable.
- Use insights from exploratory testing to identify suitable automation candidates, prioritizing repetitive regression scenarios and critical user journeys that provide lasting value.
Collaboration:
The role is embedded in the mobile app team's daily delivery work and collaborates closely with app developers, product representatives, designers, and other relevant specialists. Although the app is the test target, the engineer may coordinate with embedded, cloud, or hub application teams when app behaviour depends on their services or integrations. The purpose of this collaboration is to understand expected end-to-end behavior and isolate issues, not to make those systems separate test targets for the role.
Expected Outcomes:
- Fast, practical feedback on backlog tickets and feature increments while development is ongoing.
- Earlier discovery of functional, usability, integration, and edge-case issues in the mobile app.
- Clear evidence that complete features and tested sub-parts behave as intended within the available scope.
- Well-described defects that developers can understand, reproduce, and resolve efficiently.
- Better visibility of app quality, unresolved risks, regression impact, and release readiness.
- Stronger shared ownership of quality within the mobile app team.
- Continually expanded and dependable Appium and pytest coverage for stable, high-value mobile app scenarios.
Experience and Capabilities:
- Hands-on experience with manual testing of mobile applications in an agile product-development environment.
- Strong exploratory-testing skills and the ability to learn, design tests, and evaluate behavior while interacting with an evolving feature.
- Ability to understand backlog tickets, acceptance criteria, user flows, designs, and technical dependencies.
- Good judgement in selecting test coverage according to risk, change scope, customer impact, and the maturity of the feature.
- Experience identifying, documenting, communicating, and following up defects with software engineers.
- Understanding of mobile-specific considerations such as device and operating-system variation, permissions, connectivity, interruptions, navigation, and application state.
- Strong observational, analytical, and communication skills, with the confidence to question assumptions and clarify expected behavior.
- A collaborative and pragmatic mindset, comfortable testing incomplete feature increments and adapting as implementation details change.
- Hands-on experience creating, maintaining, and troubleshooting mobile app test automation with Appium and pytest, including writing clear and reusable Python test code.
