Expert Snowflake Data Engineer (MDP TP)

Our client is looking for a Snowflake Data Engineeer.

They run a long-term, multi-year data platform program at a major bank, responsible for sourcing data from a wide range of raw source systems, normalizing and modeling it, and preparing clean, trusted datasets that the business relies on for critical decision-making, risk analysis, and regulatory reporting.

The client's transformation layer runs on Snowflake, with transformation logic currently written in Scala using Snowpark. They are now moving this layer toward a DBT + Python-based modeling approach. This is a multi-year mandate, not a short-lived migration project — it combines keeping a large, regulated production platform healthy today with re-architecting how it's built for tomorrow.

What You'll Do

  • Act as the team's go-to Snowflake architecture authority — warehouse strategy and sizing, multi-cluster scaling, clustering keys, micro-partition pruning, query profiling, and diagnosing complex performance problems that others get stuck on.
  • Define how Snowflake-based projects should be structured as we migrate: database/schema/warehouse layout, environment separation, naming standards, and patterns that scale across ~300 transformation jobs rather than ad hoc, job-by-job decisions.
  • Own the security and access architecture: RBAC role hierarchy, secure views, data masking policies, and data-sharing design — including the shift toward secure-views-per-consumer that's already our target direction (see UDM Transformation CICD.md).
  • Partner with the team leading the Snowpark (Scala) → DBT + Python migration, reviewing designs from a Snowflake-native angle — materialization strategy, incremental load patterns, warehouse usage per workload — even if you're not writing the dbt models yourself day to day.
  • Be able to read and reason about existing Snowpark/Scala transformation code well enough to assess what's migrating cleanly versus what's "literal porting" that will perform badly once rebuilt (a known risk already seen in this migration).
  • Drive cost governance and compute efficiency across the platform — resource monitors, warehouse right-sizing, identifying runaway or poorly-tuned workloads.
  • Mentor other engineers on Snowflake internals and performance reasoning, raising the whole team's bar rather than just fixing things yourself.
