Software & DevOps Engineer – Data Platform Automation
We’re looking for: Software & DevOps Engineer – Data Platform Automation
Background:
Inter IKEA Systems is strengthening Business Insights and the Self-Service Data Platform (SSDP) to support centrally managed reporting, governed self-service, data products, and CORE-related delivery for IKEA retailers. Business Insights is developing and operating reporting solutions using Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, while SSDP is establishing a governed and scalable platform for domain-owned data products. This role replaces and expands the software-development, DevOps, and CI/CD capability being lost from Business Insights. It will establish repeatable engineering, release, deployment, and automation practices across both Business Insights and SSDP, reducing manual effort and operational risk while enabling scalable platform delivery. The consultant’s primary home will be Business Insights, with a planned secondary contribution to SSDP based on priorities.
The scope of the consultant services is to assist IKEA in:
• Establish CI/CD, Git, release-management, and environment-promotion standards for Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and data-platform assets.
• Build automation for Business Insights delivery and SSDP platform setup, deployment, observability, and operations.
• Develop reusable software, API, integration, identity, and infrastructure patterns.
• Raise software-engineering and DevOps maturity across both teams.
The main tasks in the assignment are as below:
• Design and implement CI/CD pipelines for Power BI, Microsoft Fabric artifacts, and data-platform components.
• Establish Git integration, branching strategy, deployment automation, and release-management standards.
• Support promotion across development, test, and production, including automated testing and validation gates.
• Build and maintain scripts, tools, APIs, and frameworks using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Fabric deployment pipelines, Fabric REST or Item APIs, fabric-cicd, or similar tooling.
• Automate workspace provisioning, template deployment, access patterns, operational tasks, and repeatable platform setup.
• Develop reusable integration patterns for APIs, event-based ingestion, batch, CDC, D365, Dataverse, and legacy sources.
• Implement infrastructure-as-code and support service principals, managed identities, workspace identities, and secrets handling in collaboration with IAM.
• Build monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability automation.
• Introduce and support code reviews, automated testing, release notes, branching discipline, and engineering documentation.
• Troubleshoot deployment, integration, identity, and environment issues across Business Insights and SSDP.
Desired knowledge, experience, competence, skills etc:
• Experience with fabric-cicd, Fabric REST APIs, Fabric Item APIs, Tabular Editor, TMDL, or similar deployment tooling.
• Databricks, Azure Data Factory, or Synapse CI/CD experience.
• Azure identity and security automation involving service principals, managed identities, workspace identities, and Key Vault.
• Infrastructure-as-code using Bicep, Terraform, or ARM templates.
• Automated testing for data pipelines, reports, notebooks, or semantic models.
• Event-driven integration using Event Hubs, Service Bus, webhooks, or similar technologies.
• Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights, or comparable observability tooling.
• Able and willing to work across both Business Insights and SSDP, with approximately 20–30% allocation to the secondary team as priorities require.
• Comfortable working in a platform-building environment where not everything is fully defined.
• Creates clear documentation, reusable patterns, and knowledge-sharing practices as part of normal delivery.
• Collaborates effectively with technical and business stakeholders, including IKEA retailer and franchisee contacts where relevant.
• Works transparently with backlogs, priorities, delivery plans, and agile ways of working.
• Communicates clearly in English and actively reduces single-person dependency.
Following competences must be fulfilled:
• Strong software-engineering background with production-quality standards in at least one of Python, C#, PowerShell, or TypeScript.
• Proven hands-on DevOps and CI/CD ownership using Azure DevOps and/or GitHub Actions, YAML pipelines, artifact management, and environment promotion.
• Hands-on experience implementing deployment automation for Microsoft Fabric and/or Power BI.
• Practical experience with Fabric Git integration, deployment pipelines, Fabric REST or Item APIs, semantic-model deployment, or comparable Fabric CI/CD tooling.
• Strong Git expertise, including designing and supporting branching strategies across teams.
• REST API design and consumption experience, including enterprise-system integration.
• Good understanding of Azure-based delivery, identity, security, and environment management.
• Minimum approximately five years of software-engineering experience and three years of DevOps or CI/CD experience.
