Senior Data Engineer (MS SQL Server + Power BI)

The project objective is to refactor and stabilize existing data pipelines, integrations, and reports (primarily on-premises MS SQL Server and Power BI) to ensure they are robust, automated, and maintainable with minimal operational overhead. The focus is strictly on technical reliability, automated daily ingestion, and practical maintainability rather than building complex new enterprise architecture or perfecting legacy code.

Responsibilities:

  • Review assessment findings and participate in a handover with the internal/consulting resource who completed the initial technical audit.
  • Refactor existing ETL processes, data transfers, and database procedures in an on-premises MS SQL Server environment to ensure high reliability and operational maintenance.
  • Design and implement robust, self-healing automated data ingestion routines (e.g., handling daily CSV file imports for HR/SuccessFactors data and employee working hour/absence data).
  • Analyze existing legacy Power BI reports and underlying database structures/views to identify bottlenecks, simplify data logic, and shift heavy calculations from the reporting layer into SQL logic where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (such as analytics-focused team members and internal IT/architecture representatives) to validate data requirements and maintainable technical approaches.
  • Ensure data processes gracefully handle minor manual adjustments (e.g., occasional organizational structure changes or manual Excel adjustments for special payouts) without breaking standard automated pipelines.

Qualifications and technical skills:

  • Seniority & Mindset: Senior-level experience as a Data Engineer/Database Specialist with strong pragmatic judgment. Ability to design simple, sustainable solutions for a defined 1–2 year system lifecycle without over-engineering.
-Database & Data Engineering Skills: Deep technical proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server (on-premises), writing and optimizing stored procedures, views, relational tables, and robust batch/daily data load logic.
  • Business Intelligence: solid understanding of Power BI architecture and report logic (specifically reading/understanding existing implementations, data models, and optimizing queries sent from Power BI to SQL Server).
  • Data Integration: Practical experience building and troubleshooting flat file/CSV-based data ingestion pipelines and integrating operational source system data (e.g., HR systems like SAP SuccessFactors).
  • Soft Skills & Communication: Proactive analytical approach, capability to ask the right architecture and technical questions independently, and ability to communicate effectively with technical peers and internal management.

Summary of the practicalities:

  • Project start time: October 2026
  • Project duration: Approximately 2–3 months
  • Allocation: 80–100%
  • Location requirements: Hybrid (Office in metropolitan Helsinki)
  • Language requirements: English mandatory, Finnish optional
