We are looking for a senior freelancer to help our client address cross-functional Developer Experience (DevEx) challenges!Assignment OverviewOur client is building a number of internal tools and want to gain a better understanding of how they are being used across the organization. We are seeking someone with hands-on experience in platform observability and developer productivity metrics to help us define, implement, and operationalize meaningful usage insights.

The consultant will help identify which signals and metrics matter, design and implement the technical solutions required to capture them, and surface actionable insights throug systems. One specific area of interest is measuring the usage of AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code. This may include:

• Understanding adoption and usage patterns
• Differentiating agentic pull requests from human-created pull requests where feasible
• Tracking the number of AI agents operating under a defined organizational or governance model

Responsibilities

• Define meaningful platform and developer productivity metrics
• Design and implement instrumentation and data collection mechanisms
• Establish observability approaches for internal platforms and developer tooling
• Ensure metrics are reliable, actionable, and resistant to common measurement pitfalls
• Integrate insights into Backstage and other relevant internal systems
• Collaborate with engineering teams and stakeholders to understand real developer pain points
• Provide pragmatic recommendations and help drive measurable improvements

Relevant experience may include

• Observability for platform services or internal developer platforms
• Metrics design, instrumentation, and analytics
• Understanding of metric quality, vanity metrics, and the misuse of metrics
• Developer productivity and DevEx metrics
• Segment and Amplitude
• Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, or similar observability stacks
• Backstage and Developer Portal integrations

Required Skills

• Strong technical background in observability, telemetry, and metrics
• Ability to work across multiple teams and disciplines
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Practical, outcome-oriented mindset with the ability to make progress quickly in complex environments

Location; Helsinki is preferred, but remote work is possible provided the consultant can visit our Helsinki office approximately once per month.
